Melvin Marin
Melvin is a fierce, committed advocate for every client. His practice areas are immigration, general litigation, and foreclosure and debt dispute resolution. He prides himself on personalized customer service with tailored, creative strategies for every situation.
He has successfully represented clients before the Provincial Court and the Court of King’s Bench of Alberta. Melvin has often resolved disputes through mediation often avoiding costly litigation.
Melvin assists individual and corporate clients in obtaining both temporary and permanent status including family class sponsorships, work permits, Labour Market Impact Assessments (LMIAs), and other exemptions and waivers.
Past Experience
Prior to joining Kahane Law office, Melvin articled at a family and immigration boutique law firm in Calgary, where he assisted clients with spousal and child support matters, custody and access issues, uncontested divorces, and separation agreements.
Before relocating to Calgary, Melvin worked as an immigration analyst at Deloitte in Toronto. He assisted with Federal Court litigation and a wide range of immigration services to clients from various industries, including engineering, hospitality, and information technology.
Melvin has worked as a policy analyst and project officer with Immigration Refugee and Citizenship Canada. In these roles, he supported the Government of Canada’s Visa Application Centers, and conducted legal and policy research to assist in the development of programs designed to assist foreign-trained workers across Canada and Asia.
Melvin earned an LLM from Osgoode Hall Law School. He attended the University of Ottawa Faculty of Law and earned a Bachelor of Laws from Catholic University Andres Bello in Caracas, Venezuela. During his legal studies, Melvin assisted low-income clients with a wide range of legal matters. He completed studies in French as a Second Language at L’Université du Québec à Montréal. Melvin is also fluent in Spanish and Portuguese.
Prior to his legal work and education, Melvin was a public school teacher in Atlanta, Georgia (USA). In 2008, he was named educator of the year.
Life Outside The Law
Outside the office Melvin hikes, ice skates, mountain bikes, enjoys watching independent movies and appreciates the many culinary delights at one of Calgary’s restaurants. Melvin regularly volunteers his time with Calgary Legal Guidance.
